Frequently Asked Questions

Choosing the Right Refractometer

How do I choose the right refractometer for my application?

The right refractometer depends on what you're measuring. Here's a quick guide by application:

  • Brewing & Winemaking: Look for a Brix or specific gravity (SG) scale. Dual-scale models are ideal for tracking fermentation.
  • Aquariums & Marine: Use a salinity or specific gravity refractometer designed for saltwater.
  • Honey & Beekeeping: A honey refractometer with a Brix scale (58–90%) is recommended.
  • Agriculture & Horticulture: Brix refractometers help measure crop sugar content and plant health.
  • Gemology: Specialized gemological refractometers measure refractive index (RI) for gem identification.
  • Veterinary & Medical: Clinical refractometers measure urine specific gravity and serum protein.
  • Coolants & Antifreeze: Use a coolant refractometer with the appropriate scale for your fluid type.

Calibration & Accuracy

How do I calibrate my refractometer?

Most refractometers are calibrated using distilled water:

  1. Place 2–3 drops of distilled water on the prism.
  2. Close the daylight plate and look through the eyepiece toward a light source.
  3. Use the calibration screw to adjust the boundary line to 0 Brix (or the zero mark on your scale).
  4. Wipe the prism clean with a soft cloth before measuring your sample.

For temperature-compensating (ATC) models, calibration is accurate across a range of ambient temperatures. Always calibrate before first use and periodically during extended use sessions.

How accurate are your refractometers?

Accuracy varies by model. Most analog refractometers have an accuracy of ±0.2–0.5% Brix. Digital and professional-grade models (such as Atago and Misco) offer higher precision, often ±0.1% Brix or better. Check the individual product specifications for exact accuracy ratings.

What affects refractometer accuracy?

  • Temperature: Models with Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC) minimize temperature-related errors.
  • Sample size: Always use 2–3 drops for a consistent reading.
  • Prism cleanliness: Residue from previous samples can skew results — always clean the prism between readings.
  • Calibration: Regular calibration with distilled water ensures ongoing accuracy.

Shipping

Do you offer free shipping?

Sometimes! We offer free standard shipping for some

items.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes, we ship internationally. International shipping rates are calculated at checkout based on your location and order weight. Please note that customers are responsible for any applicable customs duties or import taxes.

How long will my order take to arrive?

Domestic orders typically ship within 1–2 business days. Delivery times vary by location and shipping method selected at checkout. International orders may take longer depending on customs processing in your country.

Returns & Refunds

What is your return policy?

We offer a generous 120-day return window. If you're not satisfied with your purchase for any reason, you can return it within 120 days of delivery for a refund or exchange. Items must be in their original condition. Please visit our Return Policy page for full details.

How do I start a return?

Contact us through our contact page with your order number and reason for return, and we'll guide you through the process.

Product Compatibility & Accessories

Are your refractometers compatible with all liquids?

Each refractometer is designed for specific liquid types and concentration ranges. Using a refractometer outside its intended application (e.g., using a Brix refractometer for saltwater) will give inaccurate results. Always check the product's scale and application before purchasing.

What accessories do you carry?

We carry a range of accessories including calibration solutions, replacement eyecups, carrying cases, and pipettes. Browse our full catalog or contact us if you need a specific accessory for your model.

Which brands do you carry?

We carry our own NIS brand refractometers as well as leading brands including Atago, Hanna, and Misco — covering a wide range of applications and budgets.

Warranty

What warranty do your products come with?

Warranty coverage varies by product. Select products — including our NIS Boss refractometer — come with a 3-10-year warranty. Please refer to the individual product page for warranty details, or contact us if you have questions about a specific model.

What does the warranty cover?

Our warranty covers manufacturing defects and workmanship issues under normal use. It does not cover damage from misuse, accidents, or unauthorized modifications. Contact us to initiate a warranty claim.
