Why Use a Refractometer?

Refractive index provides a measurable property that can be used to distinguish and monitor mixtures of refrigeration lubricants.

During an oil conversion, the technician can establish the refractive index of the new lubricant and the lubricant being replaced. Subsequent system samples can then be measured and compared with those reference values to monitor the progress of the conversion.

How It Works

A small sample of refrigeration oil is placed on the refractometer prism. The instrument uses the optical properties of the sample to produce a visible boundary line on the refractive-index scale.

For an oil-conversion procedure, the technician can first measure a sample of the new, target lubricant and record its refractive index. A sample of the existing lubricant can then be measured before the conversion begins. Subsequent system samples can be compared with these reference readings to monitor the changing oil mixture.

For best results, samples should be representative of the system and tested under consistent conditions. The refractometer should be calibrated before use and cleaned after each measurement.

Basic Testing Procedure

1. Calibrate the refractometer using an appropriate calibration standard.
2. Place a small amount of the oil sample on the prism.
3. Close the daylight plate over the prism.
4. Allow the sample to reach a consistent temperature.
5. Hold the refractometer toward a suitable light source.
6. Adjust the focus until the scale and boundary line are clearly visible.
7. Read the refractive index where the boundary line intersects the scale.
8. Record the result.
9. Clean the prism and daylight plate before testing the next sample.

For refrigeration oil conversions, establish reference readings for both the new target oil and the lubricant being replaced before beginning the conversion procedure.

Important

Refractive index varies between lubricant formulations. Do not assume that all POE, PAG, alkylbenzene, or mineral oils have the same refractive index.

For an oil-conversion procedure, use the actual lubricant being installed and the actual lubricant being removed whenever possible. Follow the compressor, lubricant, and refrigerant manufacturer’s requirements for allowable residual oil levels and conversion procedures.
