Sper Scientific 300010 0-32% Brix Sugar Refractometer - Refurbished

The Sper Scientific 300010 0-32% Brix Refractometer is a portable, optical refractometer designed for measuring the sugar concentration of liquids and other solutions. This refurbished Sper Scientific Brix refractometer features a 0-32% Brix measurement range, 0.2% resolution, ±0.2% accuracy, and Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC) for convenient measurements without requiring manual temperature correction within the instrument’s specified operating conditions.

The 0-32% Brix range is one of the most versatile refractometer ranges available and is widely suited for food, beverage, agricultural, laboratory, and industrial quality-control applications. Typical samples include fruit, fruit juice, wine, milk, soft drinks, yeast cultures, and other sugar-containing solutions. The instrument can also be used for checking cutting fluids, lubricating fluids, soluble oils, tempering solutions, and emulsions where refractive-index measurements are useful for monitoring concentration.

Unlike digital refractometers, the Sper Scientific 300010 requires no batteries or electrical power. Simply place one or two drops of the sample on the prism, close the cover, and look through the eyepiece while using ambient light to read the scale.

0-32% Brix Refractometer for Sugar and Concentration Testing

Brix is commonly used to express the approximate concentration of dissolved solids in a sucrose solution. In food and beverage applications, a Brix reading can provide a quick indication of sugar concentration and can be useful for quality control, production monitoring, raw-material inspection, and process consistency.

The 0-32 Brix range is particularly useful because it covers many of the concentrations encountered in fruit and vegetable products, juices, beverages, syrups, fermentation applications, and agricultural samples.

Common applications include:

  • Fruit and fruit juice testing
  • Wine and beverage production
  • Soft drinks and other beverages
  • Food and agricultural quality control
  • Milk and dairy applications
  • Yeast culture solutions
  • Sugar-containing laboratory samples
  • Cutting-fluid concentration checks
  • Soluble oil and lubricating-fluid testing
  • Tempering and industrial process fluids
  • Emulsions and water-soluble solutions

How a Refractometer Works

A refractometer measures the way light bends, or refracts, as it passes through a liquid sample. The amount of refraction is related to the concentration of dissolved material in the sample.

For Brix testing, the instrument is calibrated so that the optical reading can be interpreted directly as a Brix value.

Testing is simple:

  1. Open the prism cover.
  2. Place one or two drops of the sample on the prism.
  3. Close the prism cover so the sample spreads evenly across the prism.
  4. Point the refractometer toward a light source.
  5. Look through the eyepiece and read the boundary between the light and dark areas of the scale.
  6. Clean the prism after testing.

The optical design allows measurements to be made without batteries or an external power supply, making this refractometer practical for laboratories, production areas, warehouses, agricultural operations, and field use.

Automatic Temperature Compensation

The Sper Scientific 300010 incorporates Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC). Temperature can affect refractive-index measurements, so ATC helps compensate for temperature-related changes during normal use.

ATC makes routine testing faster and easier because the operator does not need to manually calculate a temperature correction for every measurement. For the most accurate results, samples should still be allowed to reach a reasonably stable temperature and the instrument should be used within its specified operating conditions.

Refurbished Sper Scientific Refractometer

This listing is for a refurbished Sper Scientific 300010 refractometer.

Refurbished instruments can provide an economical alternative to purchasing a new refractometer when a dependable optical instrument is needed for routine testing. Each refurbished instrument should be inspected and verified before being placed into service.

Please contact NI Supply if you have questions about the condition of the specific refurbished unit currently available.

Portable and Easy to Use

The Sper Scientific 300010 is designed for quick measurements without complicated setup. Its compact handheld design makes it easy to carry between work areas or use in the field.

The rubber-coated construction also helps insulate the sample from heat transferred from the operator’s hand, reducing one potential source of temperature-related measurement variation.

The instrument features:

  • Handheld, portable design
  • Optical measurement system
  • No batteries required
  • No electrical power required
  • Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC)
  • Covered eyepiece
  • Bright, easy-to-read scale

Why Use a 0-32% Brix Refractometer?

A handheld Brix refractometer provides a fast way to check the concentration of a liquid without sending every sample to a laboratory for analysis. A measurement requires only a very small sample volume and can typically be completed in seconds.

For production and quality-control applications, Brix measurements can be used to monitor consistency between batches, check incoming materials, identify changes during processing, and verify that a product falls within an expected concentration range.

Keep in mind that Brix is not automatically equivalent to total dissolved solids for every type of sample. The Brix scale is based on the refractive index of sucrose solutions. Samples containing other dissolved substances can produce a Brix-equivalent reading rather than a direct measurement of sucrose concentration. For applications involving complex mixtures, the appropriate calibration and correlation should be established for the specific product being tested.
