Using a Refractometer to Test Kombucha, Beer, Wine, Mead and Other Low Alcohol Fermented Beverages

A refractometer can be a remarkably useful tool for monitoring kombucha, beer, wine, mead, cider and other fermented beverages. It is fast, requires only a small sample, and can provide useful information throughout the fermentation process.

But there is an important distinction that every brewer, fermenter and beverage producer should understand:

A refractometer measures refractive index. It does not directly measure sugar, alcohol or fermentation progress.

Before fermentation, Brix or specific gravity readings can provide a very useful indication of the starting concentration of dissolved solids. After fermentation begins, however, alcohol and organic acids change the optical properties of the liquid. That means a simple Brix-to-specific-gravity conversion can become misleading.

Used correctly, a refractometer is an excellent process-monitoring instrument. Used incorrectly, it can produce numbers that look precise but do not mean what the operator thinks they mean.

Using a Brix Refractometer to Test Hay, Grass and Forage for Livestock

Using a Brix Refractometer to Test Hay, Grass and Forage for Livestock

Hay, pasture grass and other forage crops are among the most important components of livestock feeding programs. Cattle, horses, sheep, goats and other grazing animals depend on forage for much of their daily nutrition, yet two bales of hay that look almost identical can have very different nutritional characteristics.

Color, smell, leafiness, maturity and texture can provide useful clues, but visual inspection cannot tell a producer how much water-soluble material is present in the plant. Laboratory forage analysis remains the most comprehensive way to determine nutritional characteristics such as crude protein, fiber, energy and water-soluble carbohydrates. However, laboratory testing takes time and requires sending a sample away.

A refractometer provides a fast way to take a measurement directly from plant sap or a prepared forage extract.

For producers who want a quick field measurement, a Brix refractometer can provide useful information about the soluble material present in grass and forage. The technique is particularly interesting for fresh pasture grasses, legumes and other forage plants where sap can be extracted directly from the plant.

Firefighting Suppression Foam: How to Measure Foam Concentration and Mixing Ratios with a Digital Refractometer

Firefighting Suppression Foam: How to Measure Foam Concentration and Mixing Ratios with a Digital Refractometer

Firefighting foam is engineered to work at a specific concentration. Too little foam concentrate can reduce the effectiveness of the finished foam solution, while an incorrect proportioning rate can affect foam expansion, drainage, vapor suppression, and overall fire-control performance.

That makes foam concentration testing an important part of commissioning, inspection, maintenance, and troubleshooting for fire suppression systems.

One of the most practical field methods is the digital refractometer. A small sample of foam solution can be tested in seconds, providing a quantitative measurement that is far more useful than relying only on appearance, foam blanket characteristics, or equipment settings.

Modern digital refractometers from MISCO are particularly well suited to this application because they can measure refractive index with high resolution. A properly selected BOSS refractometer can also provide a practical, economical field-testing option for applications where a low-range Brix scale is appropriate.

How Refractometers Help Control Starch Levels in Paper Pulp Mills

How Refractometers Help Control Starch Levels in Paper Pulp Mills

A refractometer can help paper mills monitor starch-containing process solutions, verify chemical concentrations, and maintain more consistent papermaking operations. For mills that use starch in the wet end, size press, or coating process, measuring dissolved solids can provide useful information about solution strength and changes in concentration.

However, there is an important distinction: a refractometer measures refractive index or a related concentration scale. It does not directly measure starch molecules or starch content in paper pulp. The most useful application depends on the type of starch solution, the other chemicals present, and whether the mill has established a correlation between refractometer readings and actual starch concentration.

The Definitive Guide to RV Hydronic Heating Systems

The Complete Guide to RV Hydronic Heating Systems, Boiler Antifreeze, and Refractometer Maintenance

Protect Your Aqua-Hot®, Alde®, Oasis®, Webasto®, or PrecisionTemp Investment with Proper Glycol Testing

Luxury RVs are designed to provide the comforts of home wherever the road leads. Unlimited hot showers, warm floors on a freezing morning, quiet interior heat, and reliable hot water in sub-zero temperatures are all possible because of one remarkable piece of equipment: the hydronic heating system.

Unlike traditional RV furnaces that simply blow hot air through ducts, hydronic systems circulate heated boiler antifreeze through a network of heat exchangers to provide comfortable interior heating while simultaneously producing continuous domestic hot water. Many premium systems can also preheat the engine, warm storage compartments, protect plumbing from freezing, and even supply radiant floor heating.

These sophisticated systems are commonly found in luxury motorhomes, premium fifth wheels, expedition vehicles, and custom RV conversions. Manufacturers such as Aqua-Hot®, Alde®, Oasis (ITR)®, Webasto®, and PrecisionTemp® have earned reputations for delivering exceptional comfort in virtually any climate.

However, this level of comfort comes with an important responsibility: routine maintenance.
